Step #3

You will work together with a group of students for this part of the project (Group of 6 if possible). Each group member will be responsible for creating a report on one animal from one of the classes of animals above: (amphibians, reptiles, insects, fish, birds, mammals). Begin by identifying an animal from each of the animal classifications. Fill in the group chart and hand it in to your teacher.

Step #4
Print out the  research report guide.   Begin your research. Do not copy from the Internet or library books.  Be sure that you understand what
you write down well enough to explain it to someone else.

Checkpoint:  Your teacher will need to look at your report guide before you continue to step #5.

Step #5

bullet Use the information from your  Research Report Guide to write a report
about your animal.  Look over your notes carefully. Write a paragraph for
each of the 5 subtopics in the report guide. Each paragraph must begin
with a topic sentence. at least 3 supporting sentences and a concluding sentence.
bullet Check your report for spelling and punctuation errors.  Have another group member read your report.  Be sure that your report is interesting and
that it is well written!
bullet Checkpoint
bullet self evaluation
bullet Make corrections and hand in a finished copy to your teacher.
bullet Rubric
bullet Put your report and your picture in a folder so that you can share it
with your group later.  Illustrations will make your group project more interesting! Your group must also complete a
 front cover, a title page,
and a table of contents.

Everyone will probably not finish at the same time.  You can do some extra activities if you have time.  Pick one of these activities when you finish your work:

Write a poem or song that teaches five things about one animal group
Make an Origami whale
Make an Animal Mask
Make a Spiral Snake
Make a Tangram Animal Puzzle
Make a Butterfly Balancer

Evaluation:

Your work in our animal unit will be scored by this rubric:

Conclusion:

You have done a lot of work to learn about animals!  The next time you go to a zoo, you will see the animals in a new light - you will feel like you know them!  If you would like to learn even more about animals, you will find lots of books in the media center that will help you to learn!
