Critical Challenge: Comparing Aboriginal Groups
Introduction:
Aboriginal groups lived in every region
of the country. The living conditions imposed by the geographical regions --
Arctic, Subarctic, Northeastern Woodlands, Great Plains, Plateau and Northwest
Coast -- encouraged a variety of lifestyles. Survival in Canada's harsh climate
depended on cooperation, sharing, and respect for the environment. In this
activity you will learn that where these groups lived and settled had a large
impact on how they lived their lives.
Task:
Research a geographical region to learn about how the aboriginal groups in this region lived. Work with another student to create a Venn Diagram (Kidspiration or Inspiration) to show the similarities and differences between groups such as:
| factors common to all/both | |
| environmental impacts on the way of life for all/both. | |
| unique ways of life | |
| impacts on the way of life for one but not both/others. |
Process:
| Research to learn more about how the natural
environment and geography of a region affected an Aboriginal group. Factors
you will research include: - landscape/climate - shelter - roles - clothing - hunting and fishing - transportation
| Select or work on assigned group . | |
| Print the appropriate Research Guide:
Arctic, Subarctic, Northeastern Woodlands, Great Plains, Plateau and Northwest Coast
| Research and share/compare information
with other students researching the same topic.
| Work with a student who has researched a different group/location. | |
| Complete a Venn diagram to show the
similarities and differences between groups.
| Review the Venn Diagram. | |
| Illustrate or write, individually,
about the biggest similarity and difference you
noticed among the Aboriginal groups you studied. (PPT Slide, poster, ect.) |
