Adapted from: Critical Challenge: Comparing Aboriginal Groups

Introduction:

Aboriginal groups lived in every region of the country. The living conditions imposed by the geographical regions -- Arctic, Subarctic, Northeastern Woodlands, Great Plains, Plateau and Northwest Coast -- encouraged a variety of lifestyles. Survival in Canada's harsh climate depended on cooperation, sharing, and respect for the environment.  In this activity you will learn that where these groups lived and settled had a large impact on how they lived their lives.

Task:

Research a geographical region to learn about how the aboriginal groups in this region lived. Work with another student to create a Venn Diagram (Kidspiration or Inspiration) to show the similarities and differences between groups such as:

bulletfactors common to all/both
bulletenvironmental impacts on the way of life for all/both.
bulletunique ways of life
bulletimpacts on the way of life for one but not both/others.

Process:

bulletResearch to learn more about how the natural environment and geography of a region affected an Aboriginal group. Factors you will research include:
- landscape/climate
- shelter
- roles
- clothing
- hunting and fishing
- transportation
bulletSelect or work on assigned group .
bulletPrint the appropriate Research Guide:

Arctic, Subarctic Northeastern Woodlands, Great Plains, Plateau and Northwest Coast

bulletResearch and share/compare information with other students researching
the same topic.
bulletWork with a student who has researched a different group/location.
bulletComplete a Venn diagram to show the similarities and differences
between groups.
bulletReview the Venn Diagram.
bulletIllustrate or write, individually, about the biggest similarity and difference you
noticed among the Aboriginal groups you studied. (PPT Slide, poster, ect.)
